@Hubzilla Support Forum+ Does anyone have any insight on running a Hubzilla instance on localhost for dev purposes?

One of my goals this year is to get past my "fuck it, do it live" approach to coding on my production hub. My hope is that this will cut down on the amount of arbitrary spammy commits that I make, resulting in code commits that are a little more coherent and structured.

Maybe you could set up containers or VMs connected together via a bridge?

localhost is fine as long as you aren't developing cross-site or cross-network federation code. If I recall, you only need to setup your test site via http://127.0.0.1

Hubzilla runs fine in a VM under Debian with localhost. You could install xdebug and use Eclipse to debug the PHP stuff.

@Sean Tilley where can I find other theme ? How to install it ? I think it is a very good idea to work on theme. The most important part. Because it is what we see.

Hey @kris , you can see my existing themes here: https://github.com/deadsuperhero/hubzilla-themes

Currently, only the Suckerberg and Clarity themes work with Hubzilla 2.8. You'll want to extract the theme files to view/theme/; one easy way to do this is to SSH into your Hubzilla server, and use the included util script for this:

./util/add_theme_repo $repo_url $nickname

In the case of adding my theme repo, you would just put:

./util/add_theme_repo git@github.com:DeadSuperHero/hubzilla-themes.git dsh

Whenever you want to update your themes, just type:

./util/update_theme_repo dsh

I should probably update my repo to include these instructions :P

As Michael suggested, my Vagrant package should be a pretty simple solution. It's complicated and heavy under the hood, but it's simple to use. After cloning it and executing "vagrant up" (plus a simple hosts file edit described in the readme), you should have a functional hub online locally. The Vagrant sync folders allow you to work with the hub web root locally using your preferred editors and see the results immediately with a browser page refresh. You can take snapshots of your hub's virtual machine if you want to bounce around between states as you tinker.

@Sean Tilley Alternatively you could use the .homeinstall script to install Hubzilla in a VM. I just tested it. Comment some functions as shown below. And use "localhost" in "hubzilla-config.txt"

Hey @Holger thanks for reaching out about this. Are you running Hubzilla 2.8 or later?
Most of my own development is done on Hubzilla's dev branch, which I update on my main hub every few days.

Hmm, I don't see any missing icons on my nav bar...

The main navigation components of the UI seem to show up without any problems on the far-right.

Good advice, but it seems to work both on my mobile phone as well as my resized desktop browser...
